Dr. Maritere Cardona Matos, born in San Juan, PR, has been an educator for 30 years. She spent nearly 18 years at The Palmas Academy, first as a literature and creative writing educator, and then as a Secondary School Principal. Dr. Cardona has been a speaker at numerous schools, universities, and conventions. She has mentored and trained many teachers in the areas of curriculum, differentiated instruction, the writing and reading processes, teaching the 21st century learner, and using diverse strategies for teaching language competencies to ELL’s in PR and in the US. Dr. Cardona is currently an Assistant Professor in the English Department at the UPR, Humacao Campus. She possesses a Doctoral degree in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Environments from Ana G. Mendez. She is certified in Neuroscience in Education and Quality Matters as a Peer Reviewer. At the Academia, her focus is on teaching research writing to English teacher candidates and serving as mentor for future writers.

  • English as a Second Language Adult Learners’ Perceptions on Language Learning as a Product of their Socio-cultural Experiences in Puerto Rico: Research focused on how socio-cultural experiences of second language learners in Puerto Rico affect their perceptions on the teaching-learning processes of ESL on the Island’s Public School System.   • The Effect of Using Electronic Dialogue Journals with Sixth Grade Students, Both Native and Non-native English Speakers, to Develop Critical Thinking Skills: Research focused on pedagogical implications of using electronic dialogue journals in the classroom and how these can be used to help stimulate critical thinking skills.
